Leadership Lessons and Rugby Triumphs: A Remarkable Afternoon with Sir Lindsay Hoyle
I recently had the incredible opportunity to attend a momentous event at Boundary Park, where Oldham RLFC celebrated their well-earned promotion to the Championship after winning League One. The team’s outstanding 56-0 victory over Workington, marking their seventh win to nil this season, was the highlight of the day. As the players proudly lifted the League One trophy, it was a proud moment for both the team and the town of Oldham.
The event wasn’t just about rugby; it was also an occasion to see some well-known faces in attendance, including Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons, and President of the Rugby Football League. Sir Lindsay has held the role of Speaker since 2019 and is a highly respected figure in both the political and sports worlds. His presence at Boundary Park was a testament to the significance of Oldham RLFC’s achievement. For me, as someone who grew up in Oldham, it was particularly special to meet Sir Lindsay and engage in a meaningful conversation about leadership.
During our chat, Sir Lindsay shared invaluable advice on what it takes to be an effective leader. He emphasised the importance of being assertive and decisive, particularly when working with powerful and influential individuals. He explained that leadership isn’t just about making decisions, but about having the confidence to stand by them, even when dealing with high-profile figures. This really struck a chord with me, and it made me reflect on how I could apply his advice to improve my own leadership skills.
One of the key takeaways from our discussion was the idea that assertiveness is critical to leading effectively. Sir Lindsay spoke about how, as Speaker of the House of Commons, he often has to navigate challenging situations and personalities. He highlighted that being clear in your decisions and standing firm is essential in gaining respect and leading others with authority. This advice was incredibly motivating, and it gave me a lot to think about regarding how I approach leadership in my own life.
What was especially inspiring was the reminder that no matter where you come from, you can gain access to valuable knowledge and experiences. Meeting Sir Lindsay, someone with such a wealth of experience, made me realise that even though I come from a smaller town like Oldham, I can still have these opportunities to grow if I put myself out there. It’s about taking the initiative, seeking out opportunities, and learning from those who have walked the path before you.
Beyond the leadership lessons, the event was also a wonderful celebration of community spirit. Another notable attendee was Oldham’s own Tommy Cannon, a local legend who, like Sir Lindsay, added to the sense of occasion. The presence of these figures, along with the jubilant crowd, really highlighted how strong the community spirit is in Oldham. It was a perfect example of how sport can bring people together and create moments of shared pride.
The whole afternoon was a brilliant combination of learning and celebration. The rugby triumphs of the Roughyeds, along with the opportunity to gain leadership insights from such a respected figure as Sir Lindsay Hoyle, made it an unforgettable experience. It reinforced the idea that success isn’t just about the victories on the pitch but also about the personal growth and learning that come from seizing opportunities and engaging with others.
All in all, it was a day I won’t soon forget. I walked away not only inspired by Oldham RLFC’s victory but also motivated to apply the leadership lessons I learned from Sir Lindsay Hoyle. It was a reminder that, no matter where you’re from, you can achieve great things and grow as a leader if you are willing to step forward and take advantage of the opportunities in front of you.
